Steve,

The costs add up in owning a pleasure horse. Most stables charge around $550 per month to board and feed the horse. Then there is the costs for having someone ride it for you if you don't go up every day. These are not inexpensive hobbies and should not be entered into lightly.

Horses who don't make the cut on the track can be used as polo ponies, jumpers, hunter jumper compteitors or a variety of other uses. The thing that was so sad was when people would leave the horses for the kill pen or not take care of them.

Thanks for reading!

I always wondered what happened to horses once they stopped racing. Of course those with the best athletic backgrounds are meant to be bred. What about those horses that did not have the best racing career? There must be hundreds if not thousands of horses, like dogs and cats, that need a home. I've always wanted to own a horse. Todd, you've given me food for thought moving forward. Thanks.

Victoria,

The owner can contact various adoption or retirement entities and make plans so that the waiting list is not so long. Educate themselves about the issue and make sure that the agency will have room for the horse when the career is completed. This is becoming a bigger problem as breeding is becoming less profitable, only highlighted by the neglect shown by Ernie Paragallo.

Feel free to email me directly to discuss this further.

Todd,
Totally agree with you! Owners should take responsibility for their horses, not just close their eyes and hope for the best. TB racehorse rescues everywhere are overbooked. Ex-racehorses need knowledgeable people to bring them along to a new career. Care and re-training costs money. As an attorney, what actions would you recommend to an owner who wants to do the right thing and make provision for their equine athlete after its racing career is over?

Nice site; interesting and informative. Cruelty and neglect are crimes. No excuses.
I am fond fan of Big Red aka Man O War (1917-1947) and kept pix of him in a shoebox under my bed as a kid and swapped / traded cards; his was hard to come by. Took several good other cards of some notability to get just one of Big Red.
I have studied his history and the love of that horse by his owners and caretakers was unbelievable.
What a horse and what a beauty was he.
Again, nice visiting your site.

You're right. Paying that much for a filly is a huge risk. Given her performances in the Oaks and Preakness, I believe that her offspring will be in great demand. I can't recall a filly who has shown such dominance at every racing level.
