Unfortunately, Star Plus' owner is not the first and certainly will not be the last good owner wanting to protect a horse he retired from racing again. While an owner may write "Not to race" on the foal papers and on the bill of sale, there are multiple ways to circumvent those terms. One of which is simply for unethical and immoral individuals to submit a fee and apply for replacement "lost" foal papers from the Jockey Club.

For decades, TB owners and advocacy/adoption groups have been requesting the Jockey Club provide a means to permanently retire a horse from racing. The options of transferring the horse without pedigree or reporting the horse deceased are not viable options as they simply further devalue a TB. The TB becomes just another "grade" horse in the slaughter pipe line. Future opportunities as breeding animals are wiped out regardless of whether someone is breeding TBs or desirous of getting them approved into warmblood sport horse breeding registries where TB pedigree must be verified. Even for those people acquiring Tbs for non-breeding use, possession of JC papers represents perceived value of their horses relative to ancestors in even the 4th and 5th generations which generally translates to a higher level of care.

As a lifelong industry participant, it is incomprehensible to me that an organization as well funded and powerful as the Jockey Club (whom the general public perceives as the “industry god”) would prefer to be vilified in the public eye via social media instead of being proactive in protecting the best interests of the industry, owners and their horses. At a minimum there needs to be a JC procedure for ownership transfer of horses being sold or adopted as permanently retired from racing whereby the designation “Permanently Retired From Racing” becomes prominently displayed on the foal papers, as well as in online databases like Equibase which would not only protect the individual horse, but the entire industry from more bad press when a previously retired, injured/retired horse breaks down.
An additional future use designation of “This Horse Is Not To Be Slaughtered” would add to the effectiveness of identifying individuals sending TBs to slaughter in violation of racetrack policies. A final request is for the Jockey Club's legal counsel to draft a sample bill of sale with specific language addressing the issues of permanent retirement from racing and not to be slaughtered which could be used as evidence of deceit in purchase/acquisition, and could be adapted to provide an owner legal recourse.

If the travesty of Star Plus can happen to a high profile owner like Earle Mack who is well known for conscientious after-care for his TBs, consider the reality of how many low profile owners/horses this happens to each year. The JC is not the AQHA and I sincerely hope the JC will step up before Star Plus disappears.

If the contents of the article prove correct it is disturbing to say the least that this poor horse, Star Plus continues to run as stated. It is unethical and irresponsible of all parties involved that this be allowed to continue. A horse that consistently participates in a race with such dismal results is clearly injured - in light of his earlier successful career. I am appalled.
I am a Canadian Owner and Breeder and have raced in the USA, both at Mountaineer and Charles Town. I sincerely hope that these tracks respond to this public outcry immediately, and take responsibility for protecting this poor animal.

And if Dutrow gets suspended, He will just use someone else as a beard trainer during his time off, and nothing will change.
Also in many of the same situations other tracks do not honor the suspension, and would open their arms for Dutrow and his stable to race at their venue.

Throw him out of the sport for good !!!

Agree! Enough is enough. During the Big Brown Triple Crown run it was almost embarressing that he was the person representing the sport.
Truth is, he'll get his 90 days...and nothing will change. It's a shame.

I have been doing a lot of research on this for the last few months. As I am planning to adopt a thoroughbred. It is really sad to see how many of these horses are just forgotten. My family loves the sport of barrel racing and we compete every weekend. We have the pleasure of owning several horses that are well taken care of. Once they get to old or are no longer ride able they go to a retirement pasture on our farm. I do not see how people can just turn their backs on them after they do not need them anymore. I have been researching different rescue groups and talking to different people about adopting a thoroughbred. I am just not sure what the best route for doing this is. Do the owners of these race horses adopt them out as well or do they just surrender them to rescue agencies?

Steve,

The costs add up in owning a pleasure horse. Most stables charge around $550 per month to board and feed the horse. Then there is the costs for having someone ride it for you if you don't go up every day. These are not inexpensive hobbies and should not be entered into lightly.

Horses who don't make the cut on the track can be used as polo ponies, jumpers, hunter jumper compteitors or a variety of other uses. The thing that was so sad was when people would leave the horses for the kill pen or not take care of them.

Thanks for reading!

I always wondered what happened to horses once they stopped racing. Of course those with the best athletic backgrounds are meant to be bred. What about those horses that did not have the best racing career? There must be hundreds if not thousands of horses, like dogs and cats, that need a home. I've always wanted to own a horse. Todd, you've given me food for thought moving forward. Thanks.
